Case 3: Firm Foundation

According to President Andrews’ 1894 Annual Address, “one of the primary objectives of RAMI in 1894 is to give the people who are employed in earning a living, an opportunity to acquire a technical knowledge of the arts, during their evening hours, which will enable them to become more efficient in their employment, or to enter other positions for which they may be better qualified.”

The site chosen for the manual training building was of historic significance in that it sat along the Erie Canal, on the corner of Spring and Washington Streets, where Colonel Nathaniel Rochester built his first home.

Colonel Nathaniel Rochester was the first president and one of the founders of the Rochester Athenaeum which merged with the Mechanics Institute. A portrait of Colonel Nathaniel Rochester is on view at the Memorial Art Gallery in Rochester.
